There’s something magical about watching an idea turn into a garment you can actually wear. Every Sunday, I slow down, settle into my quiet studio on Van Isle, and reconnect with the heart of my work: designing one-of-a-kind pieces from pre-loved fabrics. Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes into my full design process, from the very first spark to the final stitch.
Inspiration: Where It All Begins
My designs often start with a mix of nostalgia and discovery. Maybe it’s a vintage silhouette, a thrifted fabric with a story, or a color palette pulled from West Coast nature. I jot ideas in my sketchbook, pin fabrics on my wall, and let the piece evolve organically. Because all my materials are reclaimed, the fabric itself often guides the silhouette.

The Sketch: Putting Vision on Paper
Before I touch the sewing machine, I sketch out the concept. This is where I play with shape, proportion, and the “Born Again Vintage” personality - classic, romantic, and a little playful. I note details like darts, seams, closures, and trims so the blueprint is clear before I draft the pattern.

Patternmaking: Crafting the Blueprint
Every garment starts with a pattern tailored for fit, movement, and longevity. I digitally or by hand, draft or adjust the patterns (my favorite part!), making sure each line enhances the reclaimed fabrics I’m working with. Sustainability starts with good design. A well-made pattern means less waste and a piece that will last for years.

Fabric Prep & Cutting
Once the pattern is ready, I first cut and sew a sample out of scrap fabric and make any pattern corrections needed to ensure the cut and fit is correct. I then lay out my thrifted or vintage fabrics, checking for wear, grainline, and unique quirks that make each piece special. Cutting is slow and intentional, especially when working with one-of-a-kind textiles. Nothing goes to waste. Leftover scraps become patchwork, accessories, or future projects.

Sewing: The Heart of Slow Fashion
This is where everything comes together. I sew each piece slowly and thoughtfully, pressing every seam, stabilizing delicate areas, and making sure the inside looks as beautiful as the outside. There's no rushing in slow fashion, just mindful stitching and honoring the materials.

Final Touches & Fit Check
Buttons, hems, finishing seams - these final details bring the garment to life. I try the piece on (or fit it on my dress form), make adjustments, and refine the silhouette until it feels just right. That moment when the design matches the original sketch never gets old.
From My Hands to Your Wardrobe
Every garment I create is a transformation - pre-loved fabrics reimagined into something completely new. “Born Again Vintage” isn’t just a tagline, it’s the heart of my design process. Slow Stitch Sunday is my weekly reminder to cherish the craft and keep designing with intention.
