When the Spark Fades: What to Do When You’re Feeling Uninspired

Even the most creative people hit dry spells. As a fashion designer and maker of one-of-a-kind handmade clothing, there are days when I’m overflowing with ideas for new sewing patterns, vintage fabric projects, and custom designs. But other days? Nothing. My sewing machine sits untouched, the sketchbook is blank, and even my favorite teal and yellow fabric doesn’t call to me. If you’re feeling uninspired in your sewing, crafting, or creative business, you’re not broken - you’re human. Creativity is a cycle, and sometimes the best thing you can do is gently nudge it back into motion. Here’s how I work through creative burnout and find my sewing spark again.

1. Step Away from the Work

If I’m deep in a creative block, I stop trying to force it. A walk in nature, a wander through a thrift shop, or an afternoon reading a book can do more for my brain than hours of staring at fabric.

2. Surround Yourself with Beauty

I go looking for colors, textures, and shapes that excite me - even if they’re outside the world of fashion. Think vintage lace, a fresh produce display at the market, or the intricate design of vintage buttons. These moments often spark unexpected ideas for slow fashion designs.

3. Revisit Old Work

Sometimes I pull out past projects — from custom dresses to quirky upcycled clothing pieces. Seeing the details I once loved reminds me that I can create beauty, and often inspires me to reimagine older designs in new ways.

4. Start Small

Instead of launching into a full garment, I’ll make a fabric bookmark, a few steps on an old project, or a new flat sketch. Little wins build momentum and help lift that uninspired fog.

5. Trust the Cycle

Creativity naturally ebbs and flows. Those quiet periods aren’t failures, they’re part of the process. Giving yourself space makes the next burst of inspiration even more exciting.
